How To Pass Time On a Train Journey

Nowadays, the preferred method of travel is by plane, even with Europe’s extensive network of railways. Today, people want to rush through everything in life. The old saying goes “It’s not the destination, but the journey.” Everyone needs to just slow down and stop and smell the roses every now and again. Instead of getting to your destination in 12 hours, why not take a train and get there a week? There will be much to experience and you can really hold onto each moment. Yes, it may take longer, but it will be well worth it. Here are some tips on how to pass the time on your train journey.

Eat and drink

Eating, drinking, and snacking are perfect ways to pass time on a long train ride. Most trains have plenty of food and drink options to fit any budget. There are trains that offer buffet services, snacks, and drinks. Some even offer a full dining car that provides you with a 3-course meal. If the on-board food items doesn’t fit into your budget, you can always pack food and snacks with you for when you’re feeling hungry. With packing your food yourself, you get to be in charge of what you eat.

Sink your teeth in a good book

Reading is a wonderful pass time, especially when on a long journey. Be sure to pack your favorite books. If you’re a electronic fan, make sure your E-reader is filled with content that will be page turners. If you really want to get into the traveling spirit, you could do some research and find books based on the places that you are traveling through. If you’re not really huge on books, you could always scan magazines or articles from popular online publications.

Play fun mobile games

With technology nowadays, you have access to all of your favorite games right at your fingertips. No matter if you enjoy playing crossword puzzles or spinning games, there is an app for that! Playing games on your smartphone can keep you occupied for hours, especially when traveling by train. When you have exhausted all of your games and ran your phone battery down, don’t forget about good old fashioned games. Paper word search books are still available and while you’re glancing out the window, a good old game of I-spy never fails.

Listen to music

With MP3 players, ipods, and music subscriptions on smartphones, you never have to be without your favorite tunes. Music has a wonderful way of bringing back memories and really bringing out emotions. Plug in your earphones and drown everything else out and enjoy some good tunes. Create a playlist based on your destination. This is a great way to get you in the mood for where you’re going. If you’re not a really big music fan, podcasts are becoming more and more popular. You can download your favorites on iTunes and listen to podcasts on any topic from business to health and fitness. This is a very productive way to pass the time on your journey.

Take photos

Everyone is glued to their smartphones in this day and age, so if you don’t own a digital camera for taking pictures, a phone will do just fine. Take selfies and photos of the scenery as you travel through the different towns. Great photos are a nice keepsake and having them are a nice way to look back on your trip and reminisce.

Make friends with others

Watch a movie

What better way to pass the time than with an interesting movie? Some trains have built in tv’s and show a movie for the entire train to watch. If this isn’t the case for the train you’re on, you could always watch a movie on your laptop or smartphone, seeing as to how most trains offer on-board wifi. You could take it a step further and find a train themed movie to watch or a movie based on traveling.

Draw or color

Drawing or doodling is a fun way to pass time and release frustrations. If you’re getting restless or feeling bored, you could always choose to let your creativity shine on paper. There are tons of adult coloring book apps that are downloadable on your phone. Coloring is relaxing and a nice stress reliever.

Make friends with others

Of course, there will be other passengers on-board and if you see some of them starting to get bored or looking a little lonely, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation. By befriending your fellow passengers, you can learn something new and potentially make a new friend. Who knows, you may have something in common with them and it may turn into a new budding friendship or travel companion in the future.
